The North Orange County Chamber will celebrate Porto’s Bakery & Cafe at its annual Business Excellence and Leadership Awards (BELA) on Wednesday, June 19, 2019 at Summit House Restaurant.

Porto’s Bakery & Cafe originated in Cuba in the home kitchen of Rosa Porto. She lost her job after the country fell victim to communism and began her at-home bake shop, selling cakes to friends and neighbors, as a means of supporting her family.

Once granted permission to emigrate, the Porto family had nothing but the clothes on their backs upon their arrival in California. Word of her scrumptious cakes followed them to the United States, so Porto continued her cake-selling business from home.

In 1976, she opened the first Porto’s Bakery storefront on Sunset Boulevard in Echo Park. With assistance from her partner and children, Porto furthered the growth of the business. Recipes passed down from generation to generation are kept alive through the bakery, which continues to succeed as a family-owned business.

The company maintains an inclusive workforce as it offers jobs to diverse groups of individuals, including those with disabilities. Porto’s Bakery & Cafe opened in Buena Park in 2017 and recently opened its fifth location in West Covina.
