  • Plan A Safe July 4th Holiday

    July 02, 2019

Adding sizzle to your holiday is important, but so is ensuring it stays a celebration rather than becoming a dangerous situation.

“Illegal fireworks cause thousands of injuries and tremendous property damage each year,” says Captain Tony Bommarito, Public Information Officer for the Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA). “Even Safe and Sane Fireworks carry inherent dangers without proper supervision.”

The OCFA recommends attending a public firework display so you can relax and safely enjoy the holiday. If you celebrate at home, please plan appropriately to ensure your family and friends have a super safe time.

Only purchase Safe and Sane fireworks, with the State Fire Marshall seal, from a licensed vendor.

    • In Buena Park, fireworks may only be discharged on the Fourth of July between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m.
    • Do not allow children younger than 16 years old to purchase, possess or discharge fireworks unless under the direct supervision of an adult. It is prohibited by law. Parents, you’re liable for any firework-related damage or injuries caused by your children.
    • Light one firework at a time and never relight a dud.
    • Discharge fireworks away from spectators, trees, telephone poles, power lines, etc.
    • Soak fireworks in water before discarding in the trash can.
    • Remember, sparklers can exceed 1,200˚ F and can cause serious burns.
    • Have a bucket of water and hose nearby. Call 911 if an accident occurs.
    • In case of an eye injury, do not rub, touch or rinse the eye; it may cause more damage.

A list of public firework displays will be available at [www.ocfa.org]www.ocfa.org as the holiday approaches. For more information on firework usage or to report illegal firework activity, please contact the Buena Park Police Department at (714) 562-3902. The City of Buena Park wishes everyone a safe Fourth of July weekend!
